Nació de la fusión entre el matutino The Sun News-Pictorial (1922) y el vespertino The Herald (1840). Fue publicado por primera vez como The Herald-Sun en 1990 y más tarde cambió a su actual nombre. De tendencia conservadora, es el periódico más popular de Australia; en sus páginas se privilegia la cobertura deportiva más que la política. Es publicado por The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd., subsidiaria del conglomerado multimedia News Corporation, propiedad de Rupert Murdoch. Este poderoso holding, con presencia en diversos países, es el controlador de la editorial Harper Collins, del proveedor de televisión satelital DirecTV, de la cadena de televisión FOX, y de importantes diarios como el New York Post (EE.UU.) y The Sun (Reino Unido).
